Navigating with Impact: Kings Dock Car Park's Visual Journey
Where Function Meets Design
Working with a prestigious construction company and architects, Kings Dock Car Park required a comprehensive wayfinding signage system that would enhance user experience while complementing the striking exterior mesh façade that has become a Liverpool landmark.
The Story of Collaboration
Commissioned by construction company Willmott Dixon and working closely with architects Leach Rhodes Walker , we were proud to work on this eye-catching multi-story car park serving the Liverpool waterfront. The project demanded both functional clarity and design expertise to complement the building’s distinctive architectural presence, as well as navigating the challenges presented by lockdown whilst this was completed.
Our Contribution
- Comprehensive site audit and wayfinding strategy development
- Design, manufacture and installation of a suite of internal wayfinding signage across all floors
- Creation of striking external signage integrated with the building’s distinctive mesh façade
- Development of clear, intuitive directional systems for vehicle and pedestrian navigation
- Integration of illuminated entrance markers and floor identifiers
Over a four-month project, we developed a complete wayfinding system that not only facilitates navigation but enhances the architectural character of this landmark building. Our approach balanced functional requirements with aesthetic considerations, creating a coherent system that serves both practical and design objectives.
Meeting the Challenge
Car park wayfinding presents unique challenges:
- Navigation must be instantly understandable for first-time visitors
- Signage must function effectively in both daytime and nighttime conditions
- Materials must withstand high-traffic environments and varying weather conditions
- Visual systems must work harmoniously with architectural features
- Installations must be completed with minimal disruption to operational areas
